The Customer Is Not Always Right
The Customer Is Not Always Right
In some professions, the popular opinion is that the customer is always right… In fact, Harry Selfridge himself coined the phrase “the customer is always right” more than a century ago. As the proprietor of London’s Selfridge’s department store, he built a business around the idea that retailers should listen to their customers and provide excellent service. It was actually a novel notion at the time, when many businesses actively sought to mislead customers to make a sale!
The thing is, this phrase was never meant to be taken literally. The customer is decidedly NOT always right. We think even Selfridge himself would have (politely) told a customer who walked in and asked for a 85% discount to get lost?
The same is true in #Marketing.
