Anyone who owns a business will tell you, it costs money to make money. We get asked this all the time. My response is usually, how much is a car? Do we need a helicopter to get the shot we need – yes I’ve been giving this response longer than drones have been around – but the point is still the same.

There are so many variables. Lets take the car example. You need a car, gets you to point a top point B and has two doors – excellent we have defined a objective

Here are two options a Kia – achieves the objectives or a Tesla – also achieves the objectives

Both present different options and vastly different costs so we need to either define a better objective or define a budget.

It is what you want it to be. What do you want to achieve? Shall we script to budget or budget to script? What are you willing to invest into your company?

A good rule of thumb was you should spend anywhere from 3 to 5 % of your revenue in marketing and advertising.

That means if your company is generating a revenue of $100K you should be spending about $3000 $5000

Or if your generating $1M per year you should be spending about $30 – $50K

So at the minimum $3000 a year or $2500 a month should be going into marketing and advertising services.

But that\’s not always the case.

3% is if you are a stable company, looking to maintain position.

5% is more if your a company looking to grow, have a new product ever once in a while.

Even more if you’re in a highly competitive market place and you want to be the leader.

Lets just look at the numbers for a big corporation.

McDonalds spent 1.51B in 2017 in the US Market which is approximately $5.19B revenue (US alone)

Crunch tthose numbers and we see McDonalds (whom we all know) invests approximately 28% of their revenue into marketing and advertising.

So how much should you spend?

First, it is how much should you invest… Second, what are the objectives? maintain and just keep your name out there 3-5% should be fine.

Looking to grow have new things to say, products to promote, probably be closer to 5-7%

Looking to make an impact in your market, be the leader? You should invest closer to 10%+
